About

Watermelon Times comes to you from Ellen Ficklen.

Ellen’s book Watermelon was published by the American Folklife Center of the Library of Congress (yes, that Library of Congress). It is a major source of watermelon lore and information that has been cited in The Encyclopedia of Southern Culture and The Cambridge World History of Food. Besides writing about watermelon, Ellen has put together perhaps the largest U.S. “melonabilia” collection of watermelon-related items from around the world.

As a writer and editor, Ellen has produced projects for the National Geographic Society, American Rivers, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and National Public Radio (NPR). Her articles have appeared in the Washington Post, the New York Times, USA Weekend, the Baltimore Sun, the Los Angeles Times, Newsweek, Saveur, and Preservation.
